Beginners
The only things you’ll need for your first class are comfortable clothes to work out in and water.
Regulars
Since we regularly make weapon contact in class, a crucial part of our protective equipment is the fencing mask to protect the head, face, and eyes. Very often, HEMA practitioners simply use masks made for Olympic/ sport fencing, but recently more and more manufacturers are making equipment specifically for HEMA.
If you regularly participate in class, I recommend getting a fencing mask and gorget (neck protector) first for fit and hygiene reasons, however we have masks for rent for when you are first starting out.
Two highly-recommended retailers of HEMA-specific equipment are Purpleheart Armory (best place to look for beginners) & HEMA Supplies (steel sparring weapons, gloves, jackets, and more).
Of course, the level and amount of protective equipment will depend largely on the intensity of the activity. See our Code of Conduct (“Verhaltensregeln”) for more information about required gear, but this will also be discussed with each student in person.
